Stevens Creek Trail related upcoming events and news

Dear Stevens Creek Trail supporters,

We urgently need your help right now!

A major campaign has been launched against extending the trail through Sunnyvale, Los Altos, and Cupertino by Citizens for Responsible Trails.  Don't let them fool you. They think bike lanes on busy streets such as Mary Ave are good enough. They are against spending millions on trails for local bicycles and pedestrians even though we spend BILLIONS on roads for cars. Many are afraid of change and of bicyclists and pedestrians. Fear, uncertainty, and doubt blind them to the many benefits that safe and attractive local trails bring to our community, including increased property values, reduced traffic, less pollution, safer routes to schools, and better access to parks. Trails most benefit the nearest neighbors and they should be fighting to have a trail close to them instead of pushing young and old alike onto busy streets.

Unfortunately, trail opponents greatly outnumbered supporters at the first public meeting held on Thursday, May 21 in Sunnyvale. Unless many more supporters show up at the next two public meetings and/or send supportive emails, completing the Stevens Creek Trail may not happen.

If you believe in a safe and beautiful Stevens Creek Trail from the Bay Trail to the Ridge Trail, please send an email in favor and consider speaking at one of the 2 remaining meetings. With your help we can convince naysayers and City Councils that extending the trail is a valuable investment in our community that will pay dividends for generations.

Send emails to SCTfeasibilitystudy@sunnyvale.ca.gov and copy us at info@stevenscreektrail.org.

Attend one of the 2 remaining public input meetings, open to everyone from any city:

Monday June 1, 6:30-9:30pm at Community Hall, 10350 Torre Avenue, Cupertino
Monday June 8, 6:30-9:30pm at Senior Center, 266 Escuela Avenue, Mountain View

All meetings have the same format - public speaking is limited to 2 minutes per person.  If you can, please bring family and friends. Having kids speak and/or write emails can be particularly effective.

We will have 2 speaker prep meetings to help you prepare and answer questions:

Sunday May 31, 4-6pm at 795 Allison Way, Sunnyvale
Sunday June 7, 4-6pm at 795 Allison Way, Sunnyvale

If you plan to attend any meetings or just want FOSCT to know your trail alignment preference, please RSVP at: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1_Fj-J7ghTQPt2FjyQF497ejbfGnN1zTTVsttNyDosF8/viewform
(one form submission per person)

2) The special website we've created at https://sites.google.com/site/stevenscreektrailpros/ with speaking points and frequently asked questions.

Completing the Stevens Creek Trail is clearly feasible - the study has shown that. Overcoming opposition and choosing a beautiful route is the next step.  We urgently request that you make your support known for completing the Stevens Creek Trail in a safe and attractive manner.  Thanks!

Best regards,

Aaron Grossman, Executive Director

Applications now being accepted for the Citizens Working Group for the Stevens Creek Trail Joint Cities Feasibility Study

The cities of Sunnyvale, Mountain View, Los Altos, and Cupertino invite interested citizens to apply for a Citizens Working Group to assist agency staff, a consultant team, and policy representatives in preparing a feasibility study of trail development in the Stevens Creek Corridor with the intent of connecting completed or planned trail segments in Cupertino and Mountain View.  At this time the cities are looking to augment current membership with one additional member from each city.

The role of the Citizens Working Group is to serve as an extension of agency staff and the consultant team in preparing study work products for consideration by the public and a multi-agency Stevens Creek Trail Joint Cities Working Team.  The Citizens Working Group was formed in October, 2012 with two members from each city.  The cities are now seeking one additional member from each city.

Google North Bayshore presentation January 22nd!

1/21/2013

If you care about biking and development in Mountain View -

Have you longed for...

  • A proper Stevens Creek Trail exit at Charleston Rd.?
  • A trail directly to NASA?
  • A cleaner exit from the trail to Crittenden Rd.?
  • Or even public restrooms right near the trail in the North Bayshore area?

Google wants these things too and is taking action, but the plan needs your help to accomplish these goals.

A VP from Google is presenting at the Mountain View City Council’s Study Session and General Meeting this Tuesday, 1/22 (from 5:00 - 6:30PM, then 6:30 - 7:30pm in City Hall Council Chambers, 500 Castro St.) and requesting the Council proceed with the environmental study for the Stevens Creek Trail Crossings, which is the first step toward building these improvements.

Google has offered to pay for the study but has to ask the City for Staff resources to help run the study (as required by study processes).

How You Can Help!

  • Come to the Tuesday Study Session and/or Council Meeting and show support for starting the environmental study.
  • Bring other residents of MV to support starting the study process.
  • Consider speaking in favor of starting the environmental study process during public comment time.

Here's a little more background info...

Google wants to make improvements to the Stevens Creek Trail to facilitate non-car commutes to the North Bayshore and Moffett Field areas (for all employers, not just Google!), improve trail access for the general public, and also to build a bridge from the North Bayshore side of the creek to the eventual Google Bayview campus on the NASA/Moffett side. The bridge will:

  • Only be open to pedestrians, bikes, high-occupancy vehicles (buses/shuttles), and emergency vehicles (no car traffic)
  • Reduce 101 traffic congestion once the Bayview campus opens
  • Bring other improvements to the trail (the project’s proposed scope includes a graceful connection from trail to Charleston Rd. and the aforementioned restrooms and cleaned-up Crittenden exit)

The Bayview campus is already in progress, and promises to be not just "a green building" but actually environmentally restorative. You can find out more at the Council meeting this Tuesday (although this portion of the Council Meeting is slated for late in the agenda, so you best option for commenting is during the earlier study session).

The cities of Los Altos, Mountain View, Sunnyvale and Cupertino are hosting  a series of public meetings seeking feedback on a study about how and where to complete a multi-use trail in the Stevens Creek corridor between Cupertino and Mountain View.

City representatives will go over features of the Stevens Creek Trail Corridor and solicit ideas for trail connection options.

A total of six public study meetings are planned through fall 2013.

To learn more or to sign up for email updates about the study, visit the Stevens Creek Trail Joint Feasibility Study website at www.StevensCreekTrail. inSunnyvale.com.
