About Us
Who We Are and Why We’re Here
Started in 2009 to address the City of Mountain View General Plan update work at the time from a community perspective, the Mountain View Coalition for Sustainable Planning is a group of local volunteers dedicated to making Mountain View as beautiful, economically healthy, transit, bicycle, and pedestrian accessible, and affordable as possible.
Because land use planning affects so many different aspects of how we live our daily lives, MVCSP member interest and expertise encompasses issues such as housing, transportation, the environment, the economy, and beyond. We originally formed in 2009 to engage in Mountain View 2030 General Plan update activities. However, even at the onset, we knew we would also address proposals for individual developments and more specific planning processes as they arise.
Today, MVCSP, through both our general membership, and dedicated committees and project groups, identifies the projects we choose to work on through a simple consensus decision making process. We also have an extended membership list of over 300 people that receive our email Calls to Action and announcements about fun, interesting local events. MVCSP runs the Livable Communities Forum, an ongoing program that brings free, timely speakers, and films to Mountain View to generate discussion and spread awareness about sustainable planning.
MVCSP promotes sustainable local decision making by communicating and meeting with officials, working with planning staff, and attending and commenting at public City meetings. Through these methods, we have helped contribute to significant advances in our city in the short time we've been in existence!
Our Vision: Live, Work, Travel, Play!
MVCSP believes that it is possible and necessary to create a community where residents can get all of their needs met within the borders of our wonderful City. Ideally, every neighborhood in Mountain View should have jobs, homes, shopping, public transportation, and open space within walking and biking distance.
Not only should homes be close to services, but they should also be affordable and appropriate for everyone, from top-level executives to hard working nannies, and from starting families with young children, to retirees who want to enjoy downtown Mountain View without maintaining large houses and yards.
MVCSP believes that we can realize our goals by helping the City, developers, and other stakeholders to adopt sound policies and build homes in underutilized pockets of our city -- especially in areas near existing transit and amenities. More homes near jobs means less traffic congestion and more people to support improved services. All of this adds up to a Mountain View filled with diverse, friendly, easy-to-live-in neighborhoods. Additionally, Mountain View must allow and plan for development at the appropriate densities -- high in some places, and low in others.
